How to read the Harry Potter books before the HBO series
The new adaptation makes this a good time to start the books or return to them. Here is the order, a low-pressure schedule, and what to know if you want to read on a computer.
HBO says its new Harry Potter television series is coming at Christmas 2026. The show is a new adaptation of the books, which means you can read along from the beginning without needing to revisit the films first.
If you want the short answer: begin with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (published as Sorcerer's Stone in the United States), then keep going in publication order.

You do not need the companion books or stage play for the main story. Save those for later if you want more of the world.
A reading schedule that leaves room to enjoy it
The first three books move quickly. The later books are much longer, so a flat “one book each week” plan gets harder just as the story gets denser.
If you have about three months
- Weeks 1–3: read the first three books, one each week.
- Weeks 4–5: Goblet of Fire.
- Weeks 6–8: Order of the Phoenix.
- Weeks 9–10: Half-Blood Prince.
- Weeks 11–12: Deathly Hallows.
How long does it take to read all seven books?
For the 12-week plan above, set aside about 45 to 60 minutes on most days. Your pace will vary, and the later books need more time than the first three. Missing a day is fine; the plan has enough room to catch up on a weekend.
If you only want to prepare for season one
Read the first book. HBO has described the show as a faithful adaptation of the book series, but has not published a full episode-by-episode reading guide. Starting with book one is the safest spoiler-free plan.
Should you read the books before watching?
You do not have to. Reading first simply lets you meet the characters and Hogwarts in your own imagination before seeing the new cast and sets. It also gives you all the smaller scenes and bits of inner narration that adaptations tend to compress.
If spoilers bother you, stay one book ahead of the show. If they do not, watch first and use the books to spend more time with the parts you liked.
